| With over 1.3
million acres of land in the "Northeast Kingdom" and
over 90%, being unpopulated there is a great opportunity
to bag the "Big One". With much of the land
formerly owned by the
paper companies, their logging operations over the years
have created a great habitat for wildlife. Much of it
now owned by a federal, state, conservation organazation,
and have a joint agreement to keep much of it open to
current use. One can find
Moose, Deer, Bear, Rabbit, Quail and other wildlife
living were loggers once stripped the land bare (Clear
Cutting). Today, much of the forest has re-grown, many of the logging roads are still in place and the land is open to the public except where posted. The Northeast Kingdom is not heavily hunted like it once was, due to the cost of travailing this far north and the hunters having no place to stay over the years, the crowds of hunters have dwindled. Nevertheless, times have been making a change on the Island Pond area and the Northeast Kingdom in general. New motels have been built, hotels have reopened, and many residents have changed their homes into Bed and Breakfast'. Rates are low and the hospitality is nice. So if your looking to "Bag the big one" or just enjoy a nice hunt without being shoulder to shoulder with other hunters, Island Pond and Northeast Kingdom is the place to be. |
